Rachel Narozniak is a music journalist based in Los Angeles
In 2016, a fateful DM from a Crust Nation affiliate — “hey, you should come write for us” — provided the serendipitous push that propelled Rachel into dance/electronic music editorial. She’d pen more than 500 articles for the music events promotion company’s website during her time there while picking up bylines on Club Glow/Echostage’s website. In 2017, Rachel, who holds a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in English from Rutgers University–New Brunswick and The George Washington University, respectively, was hired as a Contributing Writer at Dancing Astronaut (DA).
Rachel was a key voice in DA’s editorial philosophy, content strategy, and execution. Under her leadership at the platform, she sought to amplify singer-songwriters in the dance/electronic space through the launch of her original feature series, “Supernovas.” The interview-driven series shined a light on a type of creative who, though integral to this part of the industry, has not always been treated equitably. “Supernovas” featured a variety of established and rising vocalists, ranging from Dylan Matthew to HALIENE, and powerfully contributed to discourse about the dance/electronic industry’s perception of the singer-songwriter’s role in the making of the records we know and love.
Prior to launching Supernovas, Rachel single-handedly developed and deployed DA’s ORBIT: AMPLIFY series. The weekly playlist tasked acts across dance/electronic subgenres with creating 20-track playlists exclusively containing songs from Black artists and other artists of color who inspired the curator. Intended to pay homage to the Black artists and other creatives of color without whom dance/electronic music would not be what it is today, the ORBIT: AMPLIFY series welcomed submissions from Loud Luxury, Bob Moses, Major Lazer’s Walshy Fire, Kyle Kinch, and Brando, among others.
After serving as DA’s Managing Editor and later, its Editor-in-Chief, Rachel stepped down from her leadership role to begin her career as an independent music journalist in 2023. She remains a Senior Writer at DA, where she has more than 2,800 news stories, track posts, album/event/product reviews, long-form interviews, and Q&As to her credit.
Although Rachel maintains an active presence at DA, mostly in an advisory capacity, with some editing responsibilities, she primarily works as an independent music journalist. She has published her work in various trade publications and mainstream media outlets, including Variety, Billboard, Beatportal, GRAMMY.com, MusicTech Magazine, and Los Angeles Magazine. (Fun fact: Outside of music journalism, Rachel’s work has appeared in The Washington Post and several academic literary journals, among other editorial platforms.)
Rachel’s main beat is dance/electronic music, but she also specializes in pop music and relishes the opportunity to write about other genres of music beyond these two. A collection of her pieces, across editorial outlets, appears below to acquaint you with her voice and work.
In addition to working as an independent music journalist, Rachel writes artist bios for acts across genres. Check out the “Select Artist Bios” section (further down on the page) for a showcase of some recent clients and their bios.
